As I write this I am trying to finish all errands ahead of a storm that is rolling in. I’m trying to make good use of time in a waiting area. Weather in Minnesota has been unusually mild for December but that is about to change. I’m very glad I was able to explore the rest of the trails at this state park on Sunday when it was sunny and 32⁰F (0⁰C)
December 20, 2020. Autumn weather 10.2 mi. (16.4 km) October 25, 2020. Wintery weather 7.3 m. (11.7 km)
Earlier this year I mentioned how even though it was snowy and chilly it was still lovely to be outside. December 20 was a sunny and pleasant last day of autumn.
From the parking lot I started down this paved trail. Soon I realized it is the bike path next to the highway. Pretty nice for a path side by side with a highway. I rested here a bit before turning around. This was another turn-around point. This path was not on the map. Probably access to the private property, but unmarked so I’m not sure. Plenty of other trails to explore.
Tree babies! And an ancestor standing in the background. Savannah loop.
In the central loop, this picnic shelter is set back from the trail near the pit toilet. View from the picnic shelter. This looks like maybe it used to be a visitor center? It is in the southern section. Intriguing architecture. Trails are narrower in the southern section. They are for hiking, not skiing. Looking for a lunch spot… Found a lunch spot. Lunchtime. Also drawing time. This view is my favorite of this day. South loop.
I started writing this post in a waiting room and stopped to finish my errands. It was raining lightly as I was driving. Right now it is snowing and I feel grateful to be home. Look for a third William O’Brien State Park post once this winter storm moves through and I can explore trails blanketed in snow. There is also the entire section next to the St. Croix river to show you. Be safe everyone!
