New Ulm, Minnesota is south of Hutchinson, west of Fairbault, north of Fairmont, and east of Walnut Grove. If you are familiar with Little House on the Prairie, you might remember Pa Ingalls making trips to Mankato now and then. Most likely he crossed the Minnesota river at New Ulm. The landscape is beautiful with river valleys and forests. This state park is not large, but big enough for a great day hike. It is right in town. Most state parks are out in the rural areas but this one is adjacent to the town’s golf course and residential areas. How great would it be to be able to step out of your home and onto a state park trail with a beautiful overlook of the Cottonwood river? The people of New Ulm know.
In summer, this is a sand-bottom swimming pool. Right now it is drained for the winter. I was happy to be able to highlight another State Park on my map! Flandrau is at the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers.
I love staying in the camper cabins. Very comfortable. The way was blocked to the Old Island Loop Trail. I could not find a way forward. I walked about 6 miles total. (10 km). The loop south of the Country Club was not accessible.
